I got this book on commercial hydroponics because as a retired engineer, I tend to be disappointed in the lack of technical details in most hobby oriented books. Alas, this book does not translate well at all into smaller scale, home systems, and as a reference, it is very difficult to find specific details without a lot of looking and reading. It was clearly written by an academic (Phd) type, not an engineer, and it is not a great reference for someone planning, designing and building their own small system. For one example, Resh does not support his recommendation for fast drain and fill times and no puddling for gravel culture, with either specific observations or any real data, and his next section on subirrigation of gravel beds clearly shows a drain pipe in gravel that will leave a puddle in the bottom of each bed. Since many systems today such as dutch buckets rely on not fully draining, in order to provide a backup reservoir of sorts in case of top-drip or ebb and flow pump failure, you have to wonder about some of Resh's bold faced assertions. If he supported these with references to published papers, or some test data showing oxygen levels at the roots, or growth comparisons, or related his personal experiences better, I would be a lot more impressed with his book.I would not recommend this as a reference text for smaller scale systems, and I would certainly not recommend it for a hobbyist/home grower. The same author has a book on hobby systems and it may be quite good if he adopted a very different style of writing. I think Keith Roberto's "How to Hydroponics" is OK, and I really very much enjoyed Jame Dekorne's ancient and small "The Hydroponic Hot House" with his crude methods and experiments exposed, warts and all.

The best book on hydroponis out there. This has a huge amount of charts and teaches you everything you need to know and everything you didn't know you needed to learn. The first half of the book is all chemistry and elemental make ups and molecular reactions. The second half has everthing to do with comercial opperations and plant training and scheduling. I could confidently manage a comercial greenhouse after this book.

My review comes with mixed emotions. On the one hand overall I gave the book a 5 star, but with some significant reservations. Here goes.First the reservations: if you definitively are or are going to be small scale, you don't need this pricey book. There are others that will work well for much less. There is more detail than you need for the backyard. Additionally, the author's writing style is at times stiff and wordy and technical terms frequently will have you looking for a dictionary. Another annoyance is that, despite the apparent good organization, based on looking at the table of contents, there are times whem the author wanders off course a bit.Now the good news: Wow! This book is packed with all kinds of ideas about hydroponic operations (some of them really large scale) in the US, South America, Europe, and the Far East. You really get a great range of ideas to think about. You also will get a great deal of information about alternatives in growing mediums, plant nutrition and delivery thereof, greenhouse organization, on through to harvesting methodologies. The bottom line is that, knowing what I know now, I would buy the book again, and plan to keep it close to the top of the pile :) where I can reach for some references.

Scientific, well written, a lot of figures. A lack in biological soil knowledge, but a very good presentation of chemical needs of plants. Are all these legumes and fruits as good as the ones produced with real soil ? What is a "good lettuce" ? Can lettuce produced into a moving tape cover or in vermiculite be a "good" human alimentation ? It is very difficult to answer these questions. Can humanity be living without hydroponic food production ? Certainly a scientific book that helps in trying to answer these questions.

I'm going to give this a 5 for the great detailed resource that it is. This is not a story book for casual reading nor is it designed to be a picture book. This is a college level book for content and the black and white pictures are good enough to get the point across. (However, included with the book is a DVD with full color pictures.) This is a terrific resource to be studied and referenced over and over again throughout your gardening life. In my opinion, Howard Resh is a genius at his life's work and I am thankful for it, because this resource will truly bless the direction in which I'm going.

This book is not for the faint of heart. If you're considering hydroponics at home or on your small farm ( like we are ) , some of the images of big commercial farms will be daunting / inspiring. The book is well thought out and contains a lot of useful, detailed information about commercial hydroponic systems. I also recommend the companion "Hydroponics: Questions and Answers" by the same author.

Howard Resh is the guru of the hydroponic field. Everything is here for you to learn. Formula, diy hydroponic systems, plant health, etc. Not one of those thin books that promise everything. This book is packed with all the information you have ever wanted on hydroponics and the information you have not even considered. I highly suggest that you snap up hydroponic books by this author.Ed Rivera

Just what I needed to redo my aquaponic greenhouse into a hydroponic greenhouse. Lots of need to know info.
